Gateway Computer Company was founded on a farm in Iowa outside of Sioux City. With their farm roots as a basis for their company they prided themselves on 100 North America-based support. They also found a market in people looking for a "simple" computer experience. Their signature shipping boxes with cow spots expressed their direction and their low-tech advertisement. On September 5, 1985 Ted Waitt and Mike Hammond founded the company that was at first successful for their direct sales of PCs. In 1989 Gateway 2000 moved their company to North Sioux City, South Dakota and opened a retail chain of stores called Gateway Country. Finally in October, 1998 Gateway ped the 2000 from their name and focused on their direct sales of computer systems.Gateway had a built-to-order desktop, laptop and server manufacturer that allowed their products to become very popular. But in July, 2008 Gateway ended all direct sales of their products on Gateway.com as well as phone orders. Now Gateway computers can only be purchased from major retailers and other online sites.
